Remember how while taking a walk down any aisle in your local supermarket you end up adding a bunch of fat-free desserts, low-fat snacks and calorie-counted ready meals in your basket.

But ask yourself,” is it really helpling you with your ever growing waist line?”
Over the past few decades there’s been a boom in low-fat products consumption. And this is because we have been told that to improve our health, we needed to reduce the amount of saturated fat in our diets.
It’s true that fat is high on calories indeed twice the amount we obtain from carbs and saturated fat is the type of fat believed to be primarily responsible for clogging our arteries and increasing cholesterol levels.
But what next?
So let’s just say that for a moment we decide to cut this evil fat from our diet.
Well here is the thing. If we reduce fat, we also reduce palatability of food or I can say it feels less tasty than usual.
Now in order to mask this and make low fat diet more palatable, food companies and manufacturers decided to increase the amount of sugar in their products so we continued to enjoy their taste and texture. And with this, the benefit we were supposed to get from low fat diet gets nullified, leaving us exactly where we started i.e. too much calories.
Additionally, when we eat foods high in carbs especially white refined ones, our bodies digest them more quickly.
Now I already discussed what too much carbs leads to in my last post. http://fitdoc.health.blog/2020/06/06/feeling-tired-low-on-energy-too-much-sugar-might-be-the-cause/
A diet too high in these refinejd carbs and sugars can be as unhealthy as a high-fat diet because it increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease and causes high cholesterol levels.
So how to make sure that your low fat diet is really healthy?
- Preparing your low fat diet by yourself: When we prepare our own meal we get to decide how much carbs, fat and protein goes inside the food and likewise the amount of calories going in our body.
- Knowing the fats (oils) we use: Our market is full of various type of plant and animals. Making right choice can give you a bonus.
- Its important to know that not all fats are dangerous. Trans fat of all is the one which we should avoid completely. If you were to wonder where this trans fat is in our food, then remember most of processed foods contain trans fat if not all. In recent years, companies have started reducing trans fat levels in their products and this is a good change given the health risk it can pose.

So to conclude, while low fat diet can be really helpful in checking weight, it’s better to check amount of carbs before hand so that you don’t feel cheated.
