FEELING TIRED/LOW ON ENERGY: TOO MUCH SUGAR MIGHT BE THE CAUSE

But isn’t sugar supposed to give us energy?
Maybe/maybe not

Let me quote this first “What comes up must go down” and in this case it comes down in a hard blood sugar crash.

LET’S BREAK THIS DOWN……

If you think that sugar gives you a boost of energy, in other words, a “sugar high”, that is actually false.
It might give you an instantaneous boost but immediately after, you can suddenly feel very sluggish and low on energy.

I think we all have experienced this after having too much of our soda drink or favourite ice cream or even chocolate.

•This is because the sugar initially elevates the insulin levels in your body, but the following dip in blood sugar can make you feel less energetic.
•Sugar is more of a sedative because it’s after-effects are much stronger than the little “kick” you initially feel.

So where do most of people get it wrong?

It’s when they counteract this lack of energy by eating more sugar. And so the blood sugar rollercoaster continues.
This roller coaster can be addicting to the body, as it starts to depend on the quick fix of sugar to have more energy, ultimately leading to more crashing.

• A study also shows that, high sugar consumption inhibits the production of Orexin, which is a chemical in your brain that stimulates the feeling of being awake. The more sugar you eat, the more sleepy you will feel.

But how do we deal with this?

•If too much sugar is the problem, reducing your sugar intake will see energy levels begin to stabilise before long.

•Secondly, opt for snacks that release energy/glucose slowly instead, i.e. foods with Low Glycemic Index . like fruits (bananas, mangoes), nuts, oats, quinoa, etc. These foods are usually high in fibre or some dietary fat or protein which lower the rate of glucose release in blood from that food and hence prevent spikes of insulin.

Processed foods tend to have higher Glycemic Index hence it’s best to avoid them e.g. Packed grape juice has higher GI as compared to Grapes when eaten raw.

So maybe it’s time that we start consuming sugar wisely, or we know the consequences it can have on our health with Diabetes being a major problem.

Remember, sugar is eight times as addictive as cocaine………
